Thursday, May 28, 1998 Published at 23:14 GMT 00:14 UK World: Americas Lewinsky supporters attack Starr ![]() Monica Lewinsky arrived at the federal building with her father Supporters of Monica Lewinsky, who is at the centre of an investigation into allegations of a cover-up over sexual misconduct at the White House, have condemned the latest demands for evidence from the independent prosecutor, Kenneth Starr. Miss Lewinsky, who is alleged to have had an affair with President Clinton, attended the federal building in Los Angeles to give samples of her handwriting, her voice and fingerprints.
Her lawyer, William Ginsburg, said Mr Starr had ruined the lives of Miss Lewinsky and her family to try at most to unmask a sexual relationship between two consenting adults. In an open letter published in California Lawyer magazine, Mr Ginsburg said Mr Starr had abused the power of the office of independent counsel and called on President Clinton to fire him. Lewinsky wants to tell her story Mr Starr, an independent counsel, has been investigating allegations that Clinton had an affair with the former White House intern and later asked her to lie about it to lawyers in the Paula Jones sexual harassment lawsuit. The president, who has denied the existence of an affair and cover-up, is turning down invitations to testify in the investigation. The former intern and the president allegedly had an 18-month relationship. Miss Lewinsky and Mr Clinton have denied under oath having had any sexual relationship. She has yet to testify before a federal grand jury about the matter, but her spokeswoman said she wants to tell her side of the story. Stripped of immunity from prosecution, she could be charged with perjury. |
