Alfred Rewane widow describes killing

The widow of the murdered Nigerian democracy activist, Alfred Rewane, has told the Nigerian human rights panel how her husband was killed five years ago.

Mrs Doris Rewane said that four men had forced their way into their home, tied up his personal assistant, and shot her husband in the chest.

A police investigation at the time concluded that the murder was the result of a robbery which went wrong.

One of Mr Rewane's sons, Esijolomi, told the panel he believed that his father's killing had been sponsored by the state, headed by the former military ruler, Sani Abacha. Mr Rewane said that the decision had been taken at a security meeting; he named four other men whom he said had been at the meeting.

The panel deferred the hearing of the case until November the thirtieth, when it will ask the four men to appear before it.
