Police catch escaped prisoner

Police have recaptured a criminal who escaped from court seconds after being jailed and spent two weeks on the run.

Kevin Bennett, 23, ran off from security guards after he was sentenced to two years at Newport Crown Court for attempted burglary.

Bennett was recaptured at 1400 GMT when a six-strong team of Gwent police officers caught him at the home of a girlfriend in Trevethin, Pontypool.

The Home Office launched an investigation into the incident - in conjunction with Reliance security services - following the escape on 1 November.

Bennett, of Newbridge, made his dash for freedom after Judge John Prosser passed sentence on charges, which also included breaking a probation order.

He was recaptured when police surrounded the home of his girlfriend after receiving a tip-off.

"A group of six officers went in after sealing off the house and rearrested him," said Detective Inspector Mike Jones of Gwent police.

"He is being brought back to Pontypool police station and will later be transferred to holding cells at Newport headquarters."
