Burmese opposition to set deadline for military to convene parliament

The National League for Democracy in Burma has stepped up demands on the country's military leaders to convene the parliament elected eight years ago.

The military refused to recognise the election results and is in the process of drafting a new constitution to guarantee its supremacy.

After holding a two day meeting to commemorate its election victory in 1990 the opposition said it would set a deadline for the military to convene the parliament.

It was the first time since the polls that the opposition had been given permission to hold a commemoration.
