Sri Lanka call for pork insulin ban
Health officials in Sri Lanka say a Muslim minister has asked them to ban the import of pork insulin which is being used to treat diabetic patients as a cheaper alternative to beef insulin. The minister, AHM Fowzie, said he wanted the measure to be taken in deference to the religious sensitivities of Muslim patients. Muslims are not allowed to eat pork and form a sizeable minority of Sri Lanka's population. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
