Political clashes in Accra

Police in the Ghanaian capital, Accra, say that eight people have been seriously injured in clashes between the supporters of rival political parties.

They say that the clashes occurred on Monday night in the Alajo district of the capital between supporters of the ruling National Democratic Congress, and the opposition New Patriotic Party.

The NPP is seen as the main challenger to the NDC, whose leader, Jerry Rawlings, is stepping down after having served two four-year terms as president, and eleven years as military leader.

Mr Rawlings has called on the chief of police, Peter Nanfuri, to come up with a plan to prevent any future violence.
