Fugitive sought after jump from dock

A fugitive is still on the run after jumping from the dock as he was sentenced to two years at a south Wales court.

Kevin Bennett, 23, made his escape from Newport Crown Court as he was jailed for attempted burglary.

He fled from security guards and ran out of the courtroom after Judge John Prosser passed sentence.

A Home Office investigation is underway in conjunction with an inquiry by the privately-owned Reliance Custodial Services - contractors for security in the court.

Police appeal

A spokesman for the company said: "I can confirm that a prisoner jumped the dock. He acted suddenly and managed to escape out of the building."

Bennett from Newbridge, south east Wales, was convicted of one charge of attempted burglary and one of going equipped for burglary.

He was also convicted of a breach of a probation order.

Gwent Police are continuing their appeals for the public help to trace him.

Detective Inspector Mike Jones said: "I appeal to anyone who knows where he is to contact Gwent Police."
