NGO calls for more actions against slavery work in Brazil

The human rights organisation, Anti-Slavery International has made a submission to the United Nations calling for the Brazilian government to implement stronger reforms to eradicate forced labour.

The organisation says thousands of peasants are given promises of well-paid work on isolated estates.

But they are forced to pay for their journey, tools and food, and not allowed to leave until they pay off their debts.

Anti-Slavery International says despite the creation of government teams to identify those responsible for slavery, the Brazilian justice system has failed to prosecute slave owners.
