Mexico: close race for Jalisco

Preliminary results in elections for governor in the Mexican state of Jalisco indicate a close race between the candidates from the country's two largest parties.

With around three-quarters of the vote counted, the National Action Party, or PAN, candidate, Francisco Ramirez, has almost forty-six percent, against just under forty-four percent for the candidate from the Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI, Jorge Arana.

Correspondents say the election had been expected to produce a clear victory for the PAN, which has held the governorship of Jalisco for the past five years.

The PAN won the national elections in July, ending more than seven decades of power for the PRI.
