Estrada sent for trial

Philippine President Joseph Estrada has been impeached by the House of Representatives, and is to face a corruption trial in the Senate. No vote was needed because one-third of members endorsed the move. Speaking hours before the decision Mr Estrada said he wanted the impeachment process to be speeded up because he was confident he would be cleared. It is alleged, among other things, that Mr Estrada took more than $8m in bribes from illegal gambling syndicates.
