President Yeltsin has expressed his support for the Slovakian Prime Minister, Vladimir Meciar, who is currently on a visit to Moscow.
The Russian President said a victory for Mr Meciar's party in the Slovakian general elections in September would benefit both countries.
Mr Meciar's government has been criticised in the West for its poor record on democracy, and the country is not among the first wave of candidates to join NATO and the European Union.
