Day of mourning in Mozambique
Mozambique has been holding an official day of national mourning for the victims of political violence in the country last week. The government says that thirty-eight people were killed when the main opposition party, RENAMO, staged protests and attacks in several cities and provinces over what it claimed were rigged general elections last December. In a statement, the country's Council of Ministers expressed its sympathy to relatives, and said that all individuals involved in the violence would be held responsible. Correspondents say arrests of opposition supporters have begun, with some trials already underway. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
