Talking Point Is £3.60 an hour enough?
Union leaders have attacked proposals from the government's Low Pay Commission for a national minimum wage of £3.60.
Unions are happy a minimum wage has been set but say the level is far too low.
Over a million people in low-paid, mainly catering, jobs will benefit the most. But can a level that adds up to only £7,000 a year really be enough?
Many union leaders certainly do not think so - they call it poverty pay.
The head of the largest trade union said: 'At the end of 20th century to sweat someone in a rich nation like ours for as little a £3.60 an hour does not do credit to a people committed to fairness and social justice."
Among many overworked 18-21 year-olds the news has caused dismay. They will get a minimum of £3.20. And under-18s, who have been left out altogether, say this is no incentive to work.
However, many bosses say the amounts set are acceptable - anything higher could cost the economy far too dear.
What do you think?
Some comment so far:
I cannot understand how the government can have gone so astray on this issue...
I have been in and out of very low-paid jobs for many years and have had to put up with the exploitation of unscrupulous employers... |
