New Tanzanian parliament in first sitting

Newly-elected members of parliament in Tanzania have held their first session in the central city of Dodoma.

They re-elected Pius Msekwa as Speaker -- he is a member of the governing party, Chama Cha Mapinduzi.

A candidate for Prime Minister is expected to be chosen by President Mkapa and approved by parliament by the end of this week.

The main opposition party, the Civic United Front, has protested bitterly over what it says were gross irregularities in the elections on the semi-autonomous Tanzanian islands of Zanzibar.
