Bitter sugar harvest in Cuba

An international sugar conference in Cuba has heard that the country's sugar harvest is likely to be the worst since Fidel Castro came to power nearly forty years ago.

With the harvest almost complete, officials say production will be just over three-million tons.

The BBC correspondent in Cuba says this year's bad results are bound to affect overall economic growth.

Representatives from the International Sugar Association say Cuba needs to restructure its sugar industry and allow foreign investment in the sector, a move the Havana government has so far resisted.
