Leicester outfox Kent

Ealham hit 21 as well as taking both Leicester wickets

Leicestershire veered from the sublime to the ridiculous as they beat Kent by eight wickets to go through to the Benson and Hedges semi-finals.

The sublime: an unbeaten 93 from Darren Maddy, and Phil Simmons' five for 33.

The ridiculous: 55 in extras, a B&H record, made up of 24 wides and 20 no-balls.

Leicester bowled Kent out for just 158, with Carl Hooper top scoring with 60. Maddy then helped them reach their target for the loss of just two wickets, both taken by Mark Ealham.

Yorkshire vs Durham

The Tykes recorded a similarly convincing win over Durhan at Headingley, mainly thanks to the efforts of Darren Lehmann who excelled with both bat and ball.

Yorkshire made an appalling start, slumping to two for two, losing Anthony McGrath and skipper David Byas who both failed to score.

But Lehmann then hit 119 and Michael Vaughan got 70 as Yorkshire went on to amass 269 for five in their 50 overs.

Lehmann then took two for 27 in four overs as Durham were dismissed for 167, including the wicket of Paul Collingwood who was the visitors' top scorer with 39.

Weather wins

Neither of the other two quarter-finals started until mid-afternoon because of rain, and neither were completed on Wednesday.

Surrey need 204 to beat Lancashire after the visitors collapsed from 148 for two at The Oval.

Lancashire looked well on their way to a sizeable tally until Saqlain Mushtaq claimed the first of his four for 46, which also included a hat-trick, when John Crawley was stumped for 44 by Alec Stewart.

Michael Atherton, who Stewart replaced as England skipper, put on 122 for the second wicket with Crawley but fell seven short of his century.

No other Lancashire batsman scored more than 15 as they slumped to 203 all out with two balls remaining.

Saqlain also removed Gary Yates, Ian Austin and Glen Chapple with consecutive balls of the final over to become the 12th player to take a hat-trick in the competition's 27-year history.

Surrey then squeezed in half-an-hour's batting before darkness fell and reached a promising 35 without loss off eight overs.

At Lord's, England Under-19 batsman Stephen Peters enhanced Essex's prospects of ousting Middlesex with an unbeaten 58 in 57 deliveries as his side hit 232 for nine in their 50 overs.

Richard Johnson was the pick of the Middlesex bowlers with three for 40. The home side will need to make a flying start on Thursday if the Essex total is not to prove beyond them.
