The United Nations Food Organisation, FAO, has warned that many people in the countries of the former Soviet Union suffer from poor nutrition.
The organisation said in a statement issued at its regional congress in Estonia that rising food prices have left especially the elderly and the poor in avulnerable position, although food supplies in the region have gradually improved.
The FAO says the situation is worst in the Caucasus and Central Asia.
Countries that have adapted most to the free market have the fewest problems.
