Prison inmates allege assaults

The allegations follow the suspension of nine staff in March following reports of assaults by inmates

Police are investigating further claims about attacks on inmates at Wormwood Scrubs prison.

Three inmates at the prison claim they were attacked by staff in the past 10 days, it has emerged.

Medium scale assaults

The inmates were allegedly the victims of "medium scale" assaults, said one source familiar with the complaints.

Nine staff were suspended in March after an internal Prison Service inquiry was started to investigate claims that eight inmates were repeatedly assaulted by officers at the jail.

The source said: "I am aware of allegations of medium scale assaults which have happened over the last 10 days.

"We are not talking about repetitive brutality on the scale we witnessed before, these were one-off assaults."

It is understood that at least two of the cases have been referred to the Metropolitan Police, who are investigating the original claims against staff.

A Prison Service spokesman said he was aware of two complaints made by inmates at the jail.

Representatives of one inmate have "made an allegation of a staff on prisoner assault at Wormwood Scrubs and this is being investigated by a governor grade at the prison," he said.

"We understand a separate allegation has been made by representatives of another prisoner and is being investigated by police."

Occasional allegations

He added: "Prisons occasionally receive allegations made by prisoners about treatment by staff.

"All allegations are investigated by prison management or where appropriate the police. Furthermore prisoners are entitled to go directly to the police with the allegation if they so choose."

A Metropolitan Police source confirmed they were investigating at least one fresh claim of assault at the jail.
