The £450,000 price tag is not likely to put potential buyers off either, as the property has huge historic interest.
Knightsbridge estate agents John Taylor have already received dozens of calls from people interested in the flat, and are restricting viewings to Monday June 1 and Wednesday June 3. Agent Jonathan Blaksley said: "There has already been a tremendous amount of interest from individuals wanting to view the residence. "The flat is very desirable because of its obvious history." The current owners are expecting to get an offer well above the asking price, and have pledged to donate 10% of whatever is paid above £450,000 to the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund.
Diana moved into the flat almost immediately after it was given to her and furnished the rooms in a warm but simple Habitat style. The white walls were repainted in pastel shades, the sitting room became pale primrose yellow while the bathroom was bright with red cherries. Diana charged her friends £18 a week in rent and imposed a strict cleaning rota. She took the master bedroom on the left of the entrance hallway, complete with beautiful views through the bay windows.
Diana once said she spent the happiest years of her life in the flat. In Andrew Morton's book Diana: Her True Story, she said: "I laughed my head off there." She lived there for fewer than two years and the only sad moment was when the flat was burgled and most of her jewellery was taken. Diana moved out of the flat into Clarence House, the Queen Mother's London home in February 1981, the night before her engagement to Prince Charles was officially announced. After she married Prince Charles in July, Diana's mother, Frances Shand Kydd, sold the flat to Japanese buyers for £100,000, twice what she had paid for it. The current owners, an oil executive and his wife, have lived in the flat with their two children for six years. They are now said to be looking for somewhere larger. |
