Moi sacks minister

The Kenyan president, Daniel arap Moi, has sacked his assistant minister for agriculture, Kipruto arap Kirwa.

No reason was given, although Kenyan state radio said Mr Kirwa had been involved in organising a political rally in western Kenya on Saturday to protest against insecurity.

In a BBC interview, Mr Kirwa said he welcomed his dismissal.

He said had disagreed with the president on security and land distribution and would now feel freer to represent his constituents' views on these issues.

A month ago Mr Kirwa defied President Moi by speaking about Kenya's serious economic problems.

He said at the time he would rather be sacked than remain silent.
