Burmese dissidents escape repatriation

Reports from Thailand say a group of exiled Burmese dissidents, left at the border by the Thai authorities, have returned to their residences in Thailand.

The fourteen dissidents were arrested in Bangkok last week and charged with illegally entering Thailand.

They were left at the Burmese border as part of the Thai government's repatriation programme.

Among those detained was Thein Oo, who was elected to the Burmese parliament as a member of Aung San Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy in the election of 1990.
