Bangladesh considers moves against publication of rape cases

The government in Bangladesh is considering introducing legislation to prevent newspapers from publishing the photographs and names of rape victims.

The new law would introduce a jail sentence of six months or a fine of about two hundred dollars.

Women's groups proposed the legislation to the government which says it wants to discuss the plan further with other ministries and journalists.

The BBC correspondent in Dhaka says that its extremely common for newspapers to print pictures of rape victims in an attempt to keep up circulation.
