Wendy Robinson plans to ask the Home Secretary, Jack Straw, to change the law governing criminals who try to sell their memoirs. Her demand comes within weeks of the controversial Mary Bell case, in which the child killer was alleged to have been paid £50,000 for co-operating with a book about her life. There is currently no law barring criminals writing about their crimes for publishing.
Her killer, Andrew Robinson, who is no relation, admitted manslaughter and is now held in the high security Broadmoor hospital in Berkshire. Last year the hospital stood aside and let Robinson publish the first instalment of his autobiography. But this time officials at Broadmoor have taken out a High Court injunction to block the new book, which covers the period of the killing. Robinson is currently challenging that order.
Wendy Robinson branded the killer's motive in seeking publication as "sick". She said there was a current "vogue" for stories about killers, and called it "very sad." "It's the public's morbid curiosity," she said, calling it an "appalling thing" for victims' families to go through. "I'm asking Jack Straw to respond and bring in legislation that prevents killers from doing this."
"It's a unique opportunity to see how a schizophrenic thinks," she said. "Not many of them can write like Andrew. He writes what he thinks and feels and he's got a lot of talent." |
