School chaplain on child porn charge

Mr Swindells was held by police at Munich Airport

A chaplain at a boys' school in England has been freed on bail after being arrested in Germany for allegedly importing child pornography.

The BBC's Paul Kirby reports on the arrest
The Rev Andrew Swindells, 32, who teaches at Tonbridge School in Kent, was arrested on Saturday, hours after arriving in Munich by plane from London.

The arrest was part of an operation by plainclothes police officers at Munich's main railway station.

Swindells is charged with dealing in child pornography. Police say he could face a year in prison if he is convicted.

Shortly before being given bail, he was visited by the British vice consul in Munich and it is understood his release conditions mean he can return to Kent.

Police say that when the chaplain was arrested, he was allegedly carrying a three-hour videotape depicting various sex acts involving boys aged between 11 and 14.

He was allegedly trying to swap it for more child pornography, according to the investigators.

Kent police searched Mr Swindells's room at the school after speaking with police in Munich.

Charged with smuggling

A Foreign Office spokesman said: "We can confirm that an Andrew Swindells has been arrested by German police and charged with the importation and smuggling of pornography.

Tim Devlin, spokesman for Tonbridge School, said: "There is complete surprise at the arrest and the allegations surrounding it."

He urged caution until Mr Swindells had had a chance to put his side of the story. Mr Swindells has been a religious education and geography teacher at the school for four years.
