Open and shut case

Twelve men were arrested during raids after the match

Football hooligans involved in trouble at a match that was followed by the murder of a fan have been banned from watching England play at the World Cup finals in France.

Peter Chapman, from the National Criminal Intelligence Unit: "Exclusion orders work"
The 11 supporters pleaded guilty to public order offences including throwing coins, spitting and offensive gestures, at the game between Gillingham and Fulham on March 28.

Fulham fan Matthew Fox, 24, died during a scuffle between rival fans after the match. A man has been charged with his murder.

The 11, from Kent, Surrey, London and Essex, were given exclusion orders by Kent magistrates, banning them from attending England games for two years.

They were also banned from any other matches in the UK for a year.

Kent Police spokesman Mark Pugash said the men were arrested after analysis of video footage taken inside the Gillingham ground.

He said: "This is a very clear message in advance of the World Cup. If you cause trouble at football matches you could be arrested, and if not, we will track you down and arrest you later.

"You will then be banned from going to games."
