Danes split over EU plans

Opinion polls in the run-up to a referendum in Denmark on Thursday on closer European integration show that the country is still split over the plans.

The latest poll by the Gallup organisation found that forty-seven percent favoured the European Union's plans for enlargement, and for the new single currency.

Thirty-nine percent said they will vote 'no' on Thursday, while fourteen percent are still undecided.

Denmark is deciding the issue by referendum because some sovereignty must be given to European institutions.

A BBC Correspondent in Copenhagen says 'yes' campaigners are hoping to build on their narrow lead in the opinion polls.
