The Mayor of Teheran is to stand trial on June the seventh

The authorities in Iran say the Mayor of Teheran, Ghulam-Hussein Karbaschi, will stand trial in an open court on June the seventh.

Mr Karbaschi, a well-known moderate, was accused of corruption and detained briefly last month.

The affair provoked an open row between the conservative lobby and the moderates, who back President Khatami.

Correspondents say Mr Karbaschi did much to bring the President to power in elections last year, but is also a popular and influential figure in his own right.

Mr Karbaschi has brought great changes to the capital city, including ambitious traffic control schemes and environmental projects.
