Palestinians clash with Israeli police over construction in Jerusalem

Police in east Jerusalem have beaten back Palestinian protestors who were attempting to stop the construction of homes for Jewish residents by a far-right Israeli group Ateret Cohanim.

The group laid the foundations for nine homes and put up pre-fabricated buildings overnight.

A senior Palestinian official in east Jerusalem, Faisal Husseini, accused the Israeli government of using settlers' groups to influence the outcome of negotiations on the future of Jerusalem.

Police have now ordered a halt to the construction work, after a court ruled that it was damaging an archaeological site.
