New Indonesian president meets opposition

A group of opposition leaders in Indonesia have had a meeting with President Habibie to demand a detailed timetable for new elections.

The new president has promised a new parliament as soon as possible but the opposition leaders say the government must avoid the impression it is buying time.

They also insisted on measures against corruption and nepotism.

The meeting came shortly after the new government released two of the best known political prisoners --Sri Bintang Pamungkas and Mukhtar Pakpahan -- who promptly demanded far-reaching political reforms.

The government says more prisoners are to be freed shortly as a gesture of political reconciliation.
