Sentence in Japanese nerve gas case

One of the members of a gang which released nerve gas on the Tokyo subway three years ago has been sentenced to life imprisonment.

The man, Ikuo Hayashi, a doctor, was a leader of Aum Shinri Kyo -- the Supreme Truth Sect.

He was told he'd been spared a death sentence because of his evidence against four other accused, whose case is continuing.

Sect members said they believed the end of the world was coming, and only they would survive.
