Priest leaves Guatemala after threats

The Roman Catholic Church in Guatemala says an Italian priest, who was a close associate of the murdered human rights campaigner, Bishop Juan Gerardi, has left Guatemala after receiving death threats.

A Church spokesman said the priest, Pedro Notta, had received most of the death threats after a mass during which he read out parts of a report which blamed the army for many of the deaths and disappearances during Guatemala's civil war.

Bishop Gerardi, the author of the report, was murdered last month, shortly after he made his work public.
