Tajik Uzbek Islamists

The President of Tajikistan, Emomali Rahmonov has called for the extradition of more than forty Uzbek citizens, who are wanted by the Uzbek authorities on suspicion of involvement in terrorist activities.

President Rahmonov said he had received an extradition request from the Uzbek government earlier this month.

It listed more than forty people, who fought with the Tajik opposition during the country's civil war.

The Uzbek government says they have been training Islamic militants to carry out terrorist acts inside Uzbekistan.

President Rahmonov said he expected Tajikistan's commission of reconciliation to take immediate action to ensure the group was handed over.
