Police reorganisation in Bangladesh

The government of Bangladesh has outlined plans to reorganise the police force in an attempt to address public concern about rising crime.

The Home Minister, Majoy Rafiqul Islam, said he planned to recruit fifteen thousand additional officers, and he suggested the formation of special units to combat student violence and crimes against women.

The minister conceded that most criminals escape justice because of precedural problems.

The BBC correspondent in Dhaka says public opinion has been shocked by recent sexual crimes against children.

She says a superficial reorganisation of a badly equipped and ill disciplined police force is unlikely to end public insecurity
