Ugandan rebels in clashes with army
Ugandan rebels of the Lord's Resistance Army have entered the north of the country from Sudan and clashed with government troops. Military sources said twenty-three of the rebels, who reports say are being led in person by their leader,Joseph Kony, had been killed in the northern district of Gulu. President Museveni's brother, Major-General Salim Saleh, who's been appointed overseer of the Defence Ministry says the rebels, who have now moved south to the district of Lira, have been prevented from returning to Sudan and will soon be wiped out. Speaking at an army base in Lira, he said he was in the area on the president's orders, and would be fighting alongside his men. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
