Tajik opposition concerned
Tajikistan's mainly Islamic opposition has issued a statement expressing serious concern at the recent agreement between the Tajik, Uzbek and Russian governments to set up an alliance to fight Islamic extremism. The statement says the new alliance which was set up at the beginning of May would lead to an escalation of tensions inside Tajikistan and could lead to more fighting. The opposition said it was particularly concerned because Russia and Uzbekistan were also guarantors of the Tajik peace agreement. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
