Industrial west This region includes the economic powerhouse states of Maharashtra and Gujarat as well as the picturesque state of Goa, famed for its beaches. Perhaps the biggest surprise of these elections is the Congress' strong showing in Gujarat where it won almost half the parliamentary seats. It was a comeback for the party in Gujarat, which in 2002 witnessed some of the worst religious violence in India in decades. The Congress tied up with a powerful local partner in Maharashtra but will be disappointed that it won less than half the state. In Rajasthan it was badly defeated by a resurgent BJP, fresh from a recent win in state elections there. Tiny Goa was evenly split between the Congress and the BJP.
