Carbolic spray
This was used to apply pure carbolic acid to wounds to kill bacteria. After experimenting on animals - and to much derision from his peers - Joseph Lister successfully treated an 11-year-old boy with leg wound in 1865. It healed; no amputation was needed - a medical milestone.
