In pictures: Solidarity in Poland

Twenty-five years ago, Solidarity, the first independent trade union in the former Soviet bloc, was born in Poland.

On 14 August, political and economic tensions boiled over in the city of Gdansk. Workers went on strike in the Lenin Shipyard, beginning a summer of discord. The trademark red and white colours became a symbol of resistance.
