Veteran landmark

The Cenotaph in London's Whitehall has been the focus of commemorations every year since 1919 of British servicemen who died in WWI.

It was originally built of wood and plaster before Edwin Lutyens created the current design from Portland stone in 1920.

An inscription on the memorial simply reads: "The Glorious Dead."
