Eight previous winners have been appointed or elected to office in their home countries.

Joint winners Wanze Eduards and Hugo Jabini, in Suriname, led their Maroon communities which were established in the 1700s by freed African slaves and enabled them to campaign against logging on their own lands. This led to a landmark ruling for indigenous and tribal people throughout the Americas, allowing them to control resource exploitation in their territories.
