US imports

Twenty years ago, Haiti's Artibonite Valley used to produce almost enough rice to feed the whole country.

But in the 1980s, the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank insisted that Haiti drop its import tariffs on rice in exchange for loans.

Subsidised US rice flooded into the country and many small farmers were forced out of business.

The Haitian rice crop has now dropped by half and imports from the US has increased 50-fold.
