Since the first Brazilians came to work in a meat factory in 1999, Gort's migrant community has put down roots.

Raquel Samuels, 26, sells imported foods at Real Brazil, the shop she co-owns. Amid piles of cassava beans and sugary sweets, she hopes the Brazilians can tough out Ireland's recession.

"This town would be like a ghost town without the Brazilians here."
