The parliament was overseen by the man it chose as President, Abdullahi Yusuf.

A former colonel in the Somali Army, before the country collapsed into clan warfare, he spent many years in jail under the former dictator Siad Barre.

Mr Yusuf is also a liver transplant success story; he recently returned from a check-up in London's Cromwell Hospital.

He told me his liver came from a young Irishman who had died in an accident. He said he was now fighting fit.
