New bottles

The glass is taken to a factory in Harlow, Essex, about 30 miles away, owned by O-I, a US-based multi-national glass company.

It is stored in different coloured piles, and crushed into pellets known as cullet.

It is then melted at temperatures of about 1,500C and put through moulds to be made into new bottles mainly beer and alcopop bottles, says spokesman Philip Tutt.

These are then sold on to drinks companies.
