Hard life

Many of the cottages subsequently built, in 1849, for 30 Chelsea Pensioners who came to the Falklands are still standing. But it didn't work out for many of the settlers, says Leona.

"They were offered house and land, and given a small number of livestock, seeds and tools. After their initial seven years, when permission was given to return to Britain, a number chose to leave.

"It must have been a hard life and most of them had known little other than life in a garrison."
