Overseas breaks started to emerge as a threat to British resorts with the arrival of the first mass package tours.

In 1950 Vladimir Raitz, the founder of Horizon, offered trips to Corsica. The low price included air travel, transfers and accommodation.

In the 1960s, millions of Britons began deserting their nearest seaside to relax side-by-side on Mediterranean beaches instead.

UK resorts, with their frequently poor weather, decaying facilities and fighting Mods and Rockers increasingly struggled to compete.
