'Sooth moothers'?

Most crofters need other sources of income to survive. Alex works for the coastguard while Peter – previously employed in the salmon industry – looks after the croft full time.

Technically they could both be described as "sooth moothers" (incomers who arrive from the south) as Alex was born in South Shields, due to her father’s work with the Merchant Navy, and Peter is from Sutherland, in the Highlands.

But Alex returned with her family when she was 13, and Peter settled in Shetland in 1980.
