Introduction

India’s minority Sikhs came under an unprecedented attack after Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated by her Sikh bodyguards on 31 October 1984.

At the end of what was one of the worst riots in India, a large number of Sikhs died. While a government estimate puts the number of dead at 2733, civil rights group insist that nearly 4000 Sikhs were killed in the Indian capital in three days.

Two decades after the massacre, BBC News revisits some of the riot victims.
