Freedom day dawns

27 April 1994: Millions of black voters pour onto the streets and flock to voting stations across the country. Voting takes place largely peacefully despite chaotic scenes in places, and another bomb attack at Johannesburg's main airport.

Queues stretching for miles are reported in places, with a wait of several hours to cast a ballot.
