A new £3.5m library is to be built in the centre of Wakefield.
Work has started on the foundations of the building, next to the £210m Trinity Walk shopping development. Both schemes are expected to open in 2010.
It is the first new library in Wakefield city centre for more than 100 years and will replace aging facilities at Balne Lane and Drury Lane libraries.
The library will have brand new stock, a large public meeting space, a cafe and art displays.
Councillor Denise Jeffrey, Wakefield Council's deputy leader, said images of the library released by DLA Architecture were "incredibly exciting".
She said: "The library will be so much more than people may think - a meeting place for friends and families, somewhere for quite reflection or a hub of leisure activity."
"New stock means more variety and it will give us a central library that everyone across the district can be proud of.
"We hope to attract more borrowers, which can only help raise educational standards."
